PORTRAITS
Hal Sherbeck was hired as head coach of Fullerton College Hornet football team in 1961. He was there for 31 years.
While doing this piece I talked to dozens of people who were affected by Coach Sherbeck. I was impressed by the universal depth of affection everyone has for him. In such an aggressive contact sport I didn't expect so many people to take love and respect as life lessons from their time with coach Sherbeck. The folks I spoke with consider themselves to be better people for having worked with him.
Now there is a Sherbeck field on campus. They erected a bronze statue of him sculpted by my friend Don Treadway who said he used my piece as one of his many references. Pretty neat.
When I met the coach there was a good feeling about him, sort of a comforting reassurance about him. I'm glad he was such a positive influence to so many young people.
