PORTRAITS
Pat Nixon was Second Lady of the U.S. from 1953 to 1961 and First Lady from 1969 to 1974. She went to Fullerton College in the 1930s and then on to USC. She married Richard M. Nixon in 1940 and began a lifetime under scrutiny of the public eye. She visited hospitals, schools, orphanages, village markets and hospitals around the world. She promoted charitable causes and encouraged people to volunteer. She was the most traveled First Lady and the first to visit China.
